AI companion safety and privacy tips

Last checked: 2026-10-28

AI companions can feel personal, which makes it easy to overshare. These tips are general good practice; they are not legal or medical advice, and they do not describe any specific provider's policies.

What not to share

  • Your full name, home address, phone number, employer or school.
  • Passwords, banking or card details, ID documents.
  • Anything you would not want exposed in a data breach – including intimate photos of yourself.

Account and payment hygiene

  • Use a unique password and, if offered, two-factor authentication.
  • Consider a separate email address for these services.
  • Check statements: subscriptions often renew automatically. Set a calendar reminder for renewal dates.
  • Be wary of any site that asks for payment through unusual methods or promises unverifiable results.

Know what you are talking to

An AI companion generates text, voice or images with a model. It can say things that are wrong, inconsistent or inappropriate, and it does not have feelings. Do not rely on it for medical, legal or financial advice.

Take care of yourself

If chatting starts to replace sleep, work, or real relationships, or you feel distressed, step back and talk to someone you trust. In Sweden you can call 1177 for healthcare advice; elsewhere, use your local health service.

Adults only

The apps in our directory are intended for adults (18+). If you are a parent, consider device-level controls and talk about the topic openly.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI companion apps keep my chats?

It depends on the provider. Read its privacy policy to see what is stored, for how long, and how to delete it.
